Westwind Media Upgrades Stage 1 to Dolby ATMOS with RSPE Audio Solutions

Westwind Media, already one of the top post production facilities in Los Angeles, has completed their upgrade of Stage 1 to support Dolby ATMOS with help from RSPE Audio—launching the facility into the forefront of the immersive sound market.

Westwind Media provides post-production picture and audio finishing services for some of the highest-rated television productions on air today, including “The Catch,” “Colony,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Good Fight,” “Good Girls Revolt,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal," “How to Get Away with Murder,” and more. Now with the Dolby ATMOS upgrade, Westwind is prepared to deliver this amazing content to the growing home theater ATMOS market.

RSPE Audio Solutions worked to develop a system that tied in to the current technology in Stage 1—three dedicated ProTools HD playback systems all controlled by Dual Operator Avid D-Control consoles. The interface solution was entirely Focusrite RedNet centric featuring some of their most versatile interfaces, the HD32R and D64R. The Focusrite HD32R's are used for Pro Tools interfaces to their Avid HDX systems, while the RedNet D64R interfaces provide the I/O to the Dolby Home Theater Rendering and Mastering Unit (HT-RMU).

The Dolby Home Theater RMU is designed to render audio and Dolby ATMOS print data for near field applications, such as Blu-Ray, digital delivery (streaming) and VR content. The RMU is a powerful, Dell Server host computer housed in a 19 inch rack unit, that is painstakingly assembled, configured and licensed by RSPE Audio Solutions. The RMU does all of the processing for managing pans, room calibration and configurations and houses MADI IO for input and output to the Pro Tools rigs, and speaker monitoring system.

For Dolby ATMOS monitoring, amplification was upgraded to all state-of-the-art Crown DCI series amps and implemented with Westwind’s existing JBL Screen Array. As part of the commissioning process, all speakers were precisely positioned in the room to match Dolby ATMOS certification specifications.

Want to know what it takes to upgrade your studio to Dolby ATMOS? RSPE can make the process easy and work within your budget, always offering the lowest prices.

Studio Tour : Emmy Winner Paula Fairfield's Dolby Atmos Studio

Emmy Award Winning Sound Designer Paula Fairfield is most famous for her work on the hit HBO show, “Game Of Thrones". She’s the sound designer that gives the dragons their voice, and every roar, flap or hiss coming from one of Daenerys’ three dragons is created in the studio she built in her desert home near Palm Springs.

The heart of Paula’s studio is the Avid Pro Tools S6 control surface and Colin Broad PD3 / A-Mon monitoring system that controls her HDX system. For Dolby Atmos monitoring, RSPE incorporated a JBL LSR system housed in the ASC AttackWall for Immersive Sound. The ASC AttackWall provides an optimum mixing environment that's portable and modular and translates every time.
